Salmonella ruined holiday in Marmaris

Grimsby carer is seeking compensation after she was struck down by salmonella on a foreign holiday. Toni-Louise Kavanagh, 19, and her boyfriend Karl Eggleston, 23, had saved up £1,600 for the holiday in a Turkish resort in July. But within three days, she was confined to her room at Hotel Kevansaray, in Marmaris.

Irwin Mitchell, the solicitors acting for the holidaymaker, said the hotel had an outbreak of the bug last summer, when they represented a number of tourists.

The firm today said it was launching official proceedings against the holiday operator, Thomas Cook, on Miss Kavanagh’s behalf.

Meanwhile, she told how she had to take four weeks off work with HICA Homecare after returning home and seeing her doctor. “I had to wait for the all-clear from a doctor before going back to work because some of the clients are elderly,” she said. “Salmonella can be fatal for the very young and elderly.

Our holiday was ruined.” She claimed she had seen food in the restaurant left uncovered for long periods of time, and items she was given to eat were luke warm. She also complained of scrambled eggs looking watery and said she had spotted cats in the restaurant area.

Afua Akom, from the travel law team at Irwin Mitchell, said: “It is unacceptable. “Unfortunately, we see many hotels where the same problems keep occurring year after year, causing serious and in some cases permanent illness to guests.

“This situation is unacceptable and tour operators need to ensure all hotels they use comply with the health and safety regulations which are in place to protect their guests.”

His firm submitted a claim against Thomas Cook last week. A Thomas Cook spokesperson said: “We take all reports of illness very seriously, so we were very concerned to hear that Miss Kavanagh had become unwell while on holiday.

“We do hope that Miss Kavanagh is now fully recovered. We have only very recently been made aware of this complaint and will be undertaking a full investigation and liaising with her solicitors.” Source – This is Grimsby
